The date for the reopening of a Sudbury swimming pool has been announced after months of repair work.
The Kingfisher Leisure Centre pool, in Station Road, has been closed since August 23 after investigations showed damage to the glass panel above the pool as well as the roof.
The pool is now set to open on December 11.
There were hopes the repairs would be carried out quickly but further investigations revealed other roof panels needed to be fixed as well.
This forced Babergh District Council to consider long term options for the entire glass section of the roof.
Other areas within the leisure centre have continued to operate during the closure.
Councillor Laura Smith, Babergh’s cabinet member for Thriving Communities, said: “We’d like to thank everyone for their understanding – we know this closure has caused disruption, but we have had to put people’s safety first.
“We are delighted the pool can now reopen and can’t wait to welcome swimmers back.”
The glass roof above the pool has been sealed and an additional platform is being installed just beneath it. This ensures it is safe to reopen the pool even though it limits the access to the seating area.
During this time additional pool repairs took place on the 40 year old building.
Long term proposals are being reviewed for the roof and one option includes removing the glass section and replacing it with a different design.
Cllr Smith said: “This could present a better option than a like-for-like replacement of the existing glass, and we are working on the design and costings. We will bring forward proposals in due course.”
