A popular fireworks display has been cancelled, organisers have announced.

The event, which was expected to be held at Colchester Rugby Club, was due to be held on Sunday, November 3.

However the rugby club announced on its website that the event has been cancelled.

A statement from the club said: "It is with much regret that due to unreasonable pressure from the local equine community, the Executive Committee of Colchester RFC have taken the decision to cancel the Fireworks Event at Raven park this year."

The club has said that refunds will be made automatically.

Earlier this year Redwings, which is one the largest horse charities in the UK, was calling for a review and update on current fireworks regulations in order to reduce the distress, suffering and injury to animals.

They asked the government to commission a comprehensive, objective review of firework use within current regulations, taking into account the wide-ranging negative impacts they can have not just on equines, but on other domestic animals.

It comes after the Big Night Out in Long Melford was also cancelled earlier this year

Organisers revealed that due to "financial pressures" the event will not take place this year.

Since starting more than 50 years ago, the event has raised around £800,000 for local charities.

Elisabeth Malvisi, chair of Long Melford Parish Council, said: "It's a loss for the village and it is a big loss for everyone.

"It's an iconic event and it's very, very sad and I am sure at some stage I will be getting together with my other co-councillors to discuss it."

Ms Malvisi said she hopes the event can return in the future.
