A controversial road closure in a Suffolk seaside town, that has led to concerns about traffic congestion, is on course to be completed on schedule, a council has said.

Candlet Road in Felixstowe closed in September for an eight week period to enable a new roundabout to be built.

The closure has resulted in traffic having to use alternative routes along the Dock Spur Road and Langer Road or through the Trimley villages when leaving or coming to Felixstowe.

Originally, the county council had intended the closure to take place between May and July, but this plan drew criticism from then Felixstowe mayor Seamus Bennett, who described it as "awful" and feared there would be congestion as tourists arrived for the busy summer.

The dates were also close to the school May half-term break and the Suffolk show, he said.

However, a spokesperson for the county council said: "From the latest update we received, on October 7, the contractors were meeting the target programme and on course to complete as planned, on November 10."

The council's highways team is supporting developer Bloor Homes, which is building 368 homes as part of the 2,000 home North Felixstowe Garden Neighbourhood.

Although the county council's highways department facilitates the works, the plans were approved as part of planning permission for the development by East Suffolk Council.
