Care home residents and school children have celebrated the Harvest Festival together.

The residents at Care UK’s Davers Court, Glastonbury Court, Mildenhall Lodge, and Mills Meadow care homes enjoyed the annual festival with local school pupils.

Davers Court on Shakers Lane had a special talk from Ann Beck, head of housekeeping, about the origins and significance of the Harvest Festival.

At Glastonbury Court on Glastonbury Road, Sybil Andrews School children joined residents for a Harvest Festival-themed church service.

Reverend Andrew from St Peter’s Church led the service.

The care home, now a food bank drop-off point, urged the community to donate non-perishable food items for the local charity, Gatehouse.

Ana Mihai, home manager at Glastonbury Court, said: “It was fantastic to welcome Sybil Andrews School to celebrate the annual Harvest Festival tradition and explore its importance today.”

Mildenhall Lodge on St John’s Close celebrated with a bread-making competition.

The residents made pumpkin, hedgehog, and mouse-shaped loaves, which were filled with cheese and spring onion.

The freshly made bread was enjoyed by the community along with cauliflower soup made by the head chef.

They also took part in a scarecrow-making competition.

Hannah Nurse, home manager at Mildenhall Lodge, said: “The Harvest Festival is a great opportunity to come together with residents, their families, and the wider community to support those in need during these challenging times."

At Mills Meadow on Fore Street, residents and Sir Robert Hitcham Primary School children sang Harvest Festival-themed songs and played a recycling game.

The residents also participated in a harvest cooking session, baking apple crumble with locally sourced ingredients.

Kate Smith, home manager at Mills Meadow, said: “The Harvest Festival allows residents to share in the joy and energy of the younger generation, but also provides an opportunity for children to learn about the traditions and values that have shaped our community."
