A stray hamster had a lucky escape after it was rescued by pub-goers using a pint glass.

The group were outside The Shakers pub in West Street in Harwich, a town in Essex, when they saw a one-year-old Syrian hamster being chased down the road by a cat.

The small animal was scooped up and rescued using the only thing to hand - an empty pint glass.

Animal charity Blue Cross took in the hamster at its Suffolk rehoming centre in Wherstead, near Ipswich.

The hamster, who has been named Sunflower, was found to be underweight but otherwise in good health.

Tara Schafer, foster coordinator at Blue Cross in Suffolk, said: "We are amazed she managed to survive both the cat and the busy road. Thank goodness she was spotted and scooped up and taken to safety.

"She was given the name Sunflower as she was happy snacking on them on her way to our centre."

Blue Cross was unable to trace Sunflower's owner and, after care in one of the charity's foster homes, a new home was found for her.

Her new owner, who lives in Thetford, said: "I chose Sunflower because I loved her rescue story and thought her name was cute, although now we do sometimes call her Pumpkin.

"She is getting spoiled daily with various foods and lots of love. She has settled in well and is always happy to come to your hand chirping away when you approach the cage - that will probably be all the food."
