Outpouring of support for Alex Bruce after death of nephew

Salford City confirmed the 40-year-old will take a period of absence as assistant manager due to the passing of four-month-old Madison, and will not attend Saturday’s League Two match at Crawley.

A statement from the club said: “All at the football club send our love and full support to Alex, Matt Smith and the family.

“We request that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with this sudden and unexpected loss in their family.”

Alex Bruce made 127 appearances for the Blues and scored three goals between 2006 to 2010. 

He was previously the manager of Macclesfield FC, who play in the Northern Premier League, before joining Salford City.

Steve Bruce, Alex’s father and manager of Blackpool, will also take a period of absence and miss Saturday's match against Barnsley.

“Everyone at the football club send their love to Steve and his family. We ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with this sudden and unexpected loss in their family.”

Millwall sent “unconditional love and support” and QPR their “deepest condolences, love and support” to their former striker Matt Smith, Madison’s father.

“We are with you every step of the way, Smudger,” Millwall said on X, while QPR added: “We’re all with you Smudger.”

Earlier this week, the footballing community shared their support for former Town academy coach Liam Manning, following the death of his son Theo.

Manning, was a part of the academy between 2002 and 2004 became head coach of Bristol City in 2023.
