Pupils from a Suffolk primary school collected 20 bags of rubbish as they headed out to the banks of the River Orwell to take part in a beach clean.
Year five and six pupils from Chelmondiston Church of England Primary School found a toy, a polystyrene wall and other items when they set off along the shores of the river at Pin Mill on Monday.
Headteacher Lesley Etchingham praised the pupils for doing a "fantastic job" and for their engagement in learning about caring for the environment.
“The children did a fantastic job. In no time, they were filling up the bags and were excited by what they found," said Mrs Etchingham.
"Pupils learn about the importance of caring for our environment in school and we wanted to take this further to enable children to engage in positive action in our local community.
"We know we are fortunate to have such amazing surroundings close to our school and we want our pupils to value the natural environment and know how we should conserve it.
"We were grateful for the organisational help of parent and local resident, Mr Stanley, and for the loan of litter pickers by Chelmondiston Parish Council.”
