Members of a 'struggling' Royal British Legion branch that has been open for almost 100 years are appealing for help from the community.

Joanne Cleverley, bar manager at The Royal British Legion Lavenham, which has been open since 1928, said the club is 'struggling' amid a lack of support and funding.

She is now calling on residents to pay them a visit or attend an upcoming event to help sustain the future of the club.

"We need the community to support us - we are literally struggling," she said.

"Sometimes it can be really really busy, but sometimes it can be really really quiet.

"We have a family-friendly atmosphere, snooker table, darts and we show all of the sports.

"We want everyone to know that anyone is welcome to come in. I just want people to use it a little bit more," she added.

Becky Croucher, who is a member and has been visiting the club since she was a child, is set to take on an eight-hour cycle challenge inside the club on October 26 to raise some of the much-needed funds.

So far she has raised over £560 of her £600 target.

"I have been coming here since I was like five years old," she said.

"As a young person Christmas Eve was always a tradition - all the kids in the village would come. I now bring my children here and it is like a family.

"If it closed, there isn't anywhere else like this that you can go in the village. There's nowhere with the same atmosphere. This place is what you think of when you think of an old, traditional pub.

"There's so many other British Legions that have closed, it would be nice if we could stay open," she added.

The Royal British Legion Lavenham has a snooker table, darts boards, pool table, TNT Sports and Sky Sports.

The club hosts monthly events including darts tournaments and seasonal parties, with a family fancy-dress Halloween party planned for November 2 from 5pm until late.

On November 9 the club will host bingo starting from 6pm and on November 10 to mark Remembrance Day servicemen and women will join together at the club after the a church service in the village.

The club is located down the walkway off High Street next to Little White Box.
