A town centre building looks set to become a new express supermarket as a licence application has been submitted.

Tesco Stores Ltd is seeking permission from West Suffolk council for 84-86 High Street in Newmarket, the former YMCA charity shop building, to open as a Tesco Express serving alcohol sales off premises.

The proposed licensable activities at the site include late refreshment seven days a week and alcohol sales off premises between 6am and 12am, also Monday to Sunday.

The application before West Suffolk Council reads: "Retail premises (supermarket) selling a range of goods and services. This includes the sale of alcohol for consumption off the premises."

It also explains the shop will operate a 'Think 25' policy and "have a 'good neighbour' ethos which seeks to ensure that the premises plays an active part in the local community."

Tesco Express would join other businesses that recently opened in Newmarket town centre including Potro Lounge, which filled the former Barclays bank.

Representations on the premises licence application should be made to West Suffolk Council by November 8.
