A Suffolk village road is set to be closed this evening (Friday), adding to concerns that it will add to traffic congestion caused by an existing road closure.

A section of Trimley High Road is being shut from 7pm on Friday until 5am on Saturday, with Trimley St Martin Parish Council suggesting online that the closure would be between the Howlett Way junction and Thurmans Lane.

The parish council also said the closure was to enable Suffolk County Council's highways team to carry out pothole repairs.

However, traffic is already diverting along Trimley High Road due to the closure of Candlet Road, which enables vehicles heading to Felixstowe on the A14 to bypass the Trimley villages.

Candlet Road closed for two months, starting on September 8, for the creation of a roundabout.

A number of posters on social media site Facebook said vehicles would have to use another diversion route to get in and out of Felixstowe, adding to congestion.

A spokesperson for the county council's highways team said: "We understand the concerns regarding this evening's road closure, whilst Candlet Road is closed.

"A temporary repair will be carried out using temporary traffic signals, so the road closure is no longer required.

"This maintenance will ensure the safety of the surrounding highway network."
