Suffolk is home to a number of great towns and villages - but here are some reasons why you need to visit this quiet little place.

Freston, located on the Shotley peninsula, is full of character and also home to one of the best pubs in the country.

Here are some reasons you should check out Freston, just south of Ipswich.

Local landmarks

There are a number of great places to visit in the village including Freston Tower, the Boot pub and St Peter's Church.

The tower, which is arguably the oldest folly in England, overlooks the River Orwell and dates back to the 15th century.

In 2004 the ornamental tower became available to let as a holiday home.

Although St Peter's Church is locked due to break-ins, the stunning building is worth a visit.

Freston Wood

The site of Special Scientific Interest is a place that you should take a trip to if visiting the village.

If visiting in spring the wood is a great place to see thousands of bluebells.

The wood has spring-fed valleys and light sandy soils and is dog friendly.

Award-winning pub

The Freston Boot has made a name for itself on the national stage - boasting its own in-house cinema and use as a wedding venue.

It is no stranger to national and even international recognition after it was named as one of the best pubs in the world

In 2022 the pub received a Tripadvisor Traveller's Choice Award, putting it in the top 10% of pubs and restaurants around the globe.

The award is based on reviews submitted via the travel website, with customers praising the pub for its friendly staff, good food and selection of craft beers.

Walks

There are plenty of walking routes around the village and even the peninsula.

If you were to take on a walk around the whole peninsula it could take up to seven hours.

But for those looking for a more casual stroll around the village there are plenty of options for those too.
