A new hour-long documentary that will look into the factors around the sinking of a Suffolk tycoon's superyacht will air tonight.

The Sinking of a Superyacht: How Safe is Your Voyage? will air on ITV1 at 9pm on Thursday and will examine the sinking of Mike Lynch's superyacht Bayesian, which capsized during a storm in August.

It will give a minute-by-minute analysis of the tragedy and look into potential factors involved in the sinking of the vessel off the coast of Sicily, Italy.

During the documentary there will be interviews with witnesses such as the captain of the neighbouring yacht which survived the storm, as well as rescued passengers, divers, yacht designers, yachting experts and climate scientists.

Dr Lynch, who lived near Wickham Market, and his daughter Hannah went missing after the Bayesian luxury yacht they were staying on sank during the freak storm off the Italian village of Porticello on August 19.

After days of searching the yacht, which laid 50 on the seabed 50 metres below the surface, divers recovered the bodies of both Dr Lynch, 59, and his 18-year-old daughter

According to a recently-published court listing, the inquests of both Dr and Miss Lynch will be formally opened at Suffolk Coroners’ Court in Ipswich on Friday.

Five other people, including the chef on the Bayesian, died as a result of the yacht capsizing.

Following the sinking, the Lynch family shared a statement via a spokesman which said: “The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends."

"Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. They would like to sincerely thank the Italian coastguard, emergency services and all those who helped in the rescue.

"Their one request now is that their privacy be respected at this time of unspeakable grief.”
