Two young people have begun a fundraiser to raise £16,000 to lighten up a town's skatepark.

Lily Gooch and Jack Marsh, both skateboard enthusiasts, have taken on the ambitious project to raise the money to get floodlights installed at Beccles Skatepark.

The project aims to make the area more "accessible and safe to users of the park", particularly as it gets darker in the winter months.

A previous project for the skatepark floodlights has been attempted in the past.

Miss Gooch, 22, said: "We thought why not try and get it on its feet again".

Jack, 17, travels from Lowestoft to use Beccles Skatepark.

He said the people at the skatepark are "a community".

”More people think of it just as a sport but it’s like a family,” he added.

The ages of skateboarders vary from "three to thirty" Jack said, particularly at weekends when parents go with their children.

But, without lights when it gets dark, Jack and his co-fundraiser said the skatepark can become unsafe.

Miss Gooch said: "It is out of the way and you can't see people approaching".

Jack added: "People try and skate for as long as possible.

"They have to go to other locations like by Tesco where they do street skating."

Lily said: "It would not just be the skateboarders that it would be benefitting.

“It would be walkers, dog walkers, kids - the whole community.”

As well as the GoFundMe, the pair hope to hold fundraising events including "a skatejam", which is a competition for skateboarders, alongside sponsored runs.

The skatepark is located next to the Beccles Common, off Common Lane.

Paul Cunningham, Beccles Town Council clerk, said the project is "entirely admirable".

"We have planning permission to put up floodlights, but we haven’t taken this forward because of a shortage of funds for it," he added.

He said he is in discussion with district councillor Sheryl Rumble and county councillor Ash Lever to find funding towards the costs.

The quote for the floodlights is £16,000.
