It’s Home News Delivery Month, and over the next few weeks we will be shining a light on the many newsagents and local shops who work tirelessly to bring our local, independent journalism straight to your door.

Each day, thousands of copies of the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star hit doormats around the county.

This is all thanks to hardworking people such as Daryn Reffell and his wife, Caroline, who have been running Sicklesmere Post Office and shop for the past 10 years.

Mr and Mrs Reffell took of the running of the post office and shop in August 2014. Since then, they have got to know their regular customers, as well as serving anyone who happens to be passing by, happily stopping for a chat in between serving.

“It’s like working in a pub, only without the alcohol!” laughed Mr Reffell, 56.

The Reffells sell and deliver around 100 copies of the East Anglian Daily Times each day.

The working day begins at 4am for Mr Reffell, who receives the bumper delivery of newspapers at around 4.30am before setting off on his own rounds at 4.45am.

The Reffells deliver within a 10-mile radius, stretching from Bury St Edmunds towards Sudbury, and then down towards Lavenham and Long Melford.

Mr Reffell likes to keep up with the news himself and says that the quiet time in the morning in between customers is the perfect time to catch up on the day’s headlines in the East Anglian Daily Times.

Mr and Mrs Reffell are hopeful that they will continue serving community for another 10 years.

“We’re very, very lucky,” said Mr Reffell. “When you enjoy what you do, it doesn’t feel like a job.”
