A new banking hub is expected to open its doors in a Suffolk town by July next year, it has been confirmed. 

Cash Access UK will take on the running of the new hub in Hadleigh, after a previous recommendation was made by LINK. 

The request for a branch in the town was made by community leaders, including South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge. 

Hadleigh is one of many Suffolk towns left with few options for banking services following a raft of branch closures over the years.

Mr Cartlidge said: "Access to cash and local banking services are still vital for many people in South Suffolk – yes, many now choose to bank online, but cash and other in-person services are still vital for my constituents, particularly small businesses, and more vulnerable citizens.

"It was therefore brilliant news when it was announced earlier this year that Hadleigh would be getting a banking hub."

Cash Access UK is a not-for-profit company owned by the biggest high street banks, including Barclays and HSBC.

The hub will provide a counter service for cash transactions, as well as a banker service where customers will be able to speak face-to-face with their own bank or building society about more complicated matters.

Mr Cartlidge added: "The hub will provide key banking services and residents will be able to meet with representatives from the main banks. Following a recent meeting with Cash Access UK, I’ve received confirmation that a banking solution will be open by July next year.

"That may be a temporary hub whilst a full-time premises is secured but either way, we will have a banking hub in the town at some point next year. This is a great boost for the town and people of Hadleigh.”

Councillor Jane Carruthers, who represents Hadleigh South at Babergh District Council, added: "I am very pleased to hear that Hadleigh will be getting a banking hub. This is fantastic news for our town.

It comes amid the news that Lloyds will continue to operate in Haverhill High Street, in west Suffolk, until December. 

The bank is the last remaining branch in the town and was due to close on June 25. 

However its website states the closure has been pushed back until December 2, after it was previously delayed until Tuesday, September 24. 

Cash Access UK has opened its temporary banking branch in Haverhill. 

The permanent site will be located in the former Clintons card store.
