A Suffolk homeowner was left feeling ‘nauseous’ after an attempt to break into her house, a court has heard.
Before Ipswich Crown Court via video link was 22-year-old Wesley Spring, of no fixed abode, who previously admitted four counts of attempted burglary and a count of vehicle interference all on June 28 this year.
On Wednesday he was sentenced to a year in prison for the offences.
Spring had just been released from a young offender’s institute and moved into the Valbri Motel in Brandon.
The court heard on the same night he was moved there he drunk “vast quantities” of alcohol and was then evicted for poor behaviour.
The defendant then went out in the local area at around 3am in search of keys to steal so he could go on a joy ride as he has a “fascination with driving cars at speed”, the court heard.
The court heard from the victim of the first property he tried to gain access to, who is a married mother.
She said: “I always believed I felt safe in my home.
“Nothing could have prepared me for how I would feel on walking up in the morning to find you had tried to ruin and taint my safe space.
“I felt nauseous looking back at the doorbell footage.
“We felt we had no option but to purchase more security equipment to prevent this happening again.”
She added: “I sat up at night for days staring at the live view expecting to see someone prowling”.
The victim explained that her child now sleeps on the floor in fear of someone coming in again and she found it difficult for a long time to focus on anything other than what had happened.
“This crime, your attempt, has made me and my family feel vulnerable” she said.
After this failed attempt Spring went on and tried to crawl through the window of another home but the owner woke up and shouted at him, so he ran off.
The court heard he then broke into a homeowner’s garage but did not take anything and then attempted to burgle yet another house, but again failed.
Eventually he was caught trying to break into a Jaguar car and police came to the scene and arrested him.
In mitigation the court heard he felt suicidal at the time and he has a long childhood history of neglect and abuse.
However, Judge David Wilson said he was a danger to the public and jailed Spring for one year.
