A man accused of stabbing a man in the arms during a violent clash outside his home told police he didn’t go outside intending to hurt someone.

Robert Wilson said he’d been at home in Orchard Valley, Holton, near Halesworth with his family at about 10.30pm when he heard people getting out of a car and saw them coming down his drive, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

He denied leaving his house with anything in his hands and said he and a man carrying a baseball bat had gone towards each other.

“There were no words. We caught eyes and went for each other,” said Wilson during a police interview after his arrest.

He said his aim was to try to stop any of the group getting to his wife and family and when he saw a man with a knife he had grabbed the blade but had no memory of stabbing anyone with it.

Wilson, 33, of Orchard Valley, Holton, has denied wounding Karl Phillips with intent to cause him grievous harm and two offences of threatening him with a knife.

Phillips, 50, of Wenhaston Lane, Halesworth, denies wounding Wilson with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm, threatening occupants of a passing car with a baseball bat and threatening Wilson with a baseball bat.

All the offences are alleged to have taken place on November 16, 2020.

It has been alleged that members of Phillips’ family went to Wilson’s home in Orchard Valley, Holton, at about 10.30pm after an earlier incident involving members of both their families.

During the incident in Holton, Phillips had allegedly hit the windscreen of a passing car with a baseball bat before being involved in a confrontation with Wilson during which he allegedly hit him on the forehead with the baseball bat before he was allegedly stabbed on both arms by Wilson.

The trial continues.
