Two months of overnight closures on the A14 near Ipswich will start tonight after being postponed for weeks.

The A14 will be closed over some nights from junction 52 near Claydon to junction 55 at the Copdock Interchange until approximately mid-November.

The closure will be in place between 8pm and 6am on weeknights to allow a new asphalt surface to be applied along the stretch of road.

This comes after the works were initially postponed in early September and again later in the month.

A spokesman said the delays allowed operatives "to incorporate maintenance planned for later in the year and reduce the number of closures required on this section of the A14".

A 10-mile diversion route will be in place from the B1113 through Bramford and Sproughton, A1071 and A1214, rejoining the A14 at the Copdock Interchange, and visa versa.

This comes as Ipswich has recently seen heavy delays throughout the town following the closure of a lane on the westbound carriageway on the A14 at Orwell Bridge.

A full carriageway closure will also be in place on the A14 at Orwell Bridge on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Drivers have been advised to allow extra time for journeys and seek alternative routes if possible.

National Highways said the works will help to extend the life of the road surface and minimise the need for more extensive repairs.
