A cafe that "lets the ingredients shine" has been added to a top restaurant guide.

The Canteen opened in Southwold in 2022 as part of the renovation of the Old Hospital building.

It is open from 8.30am until 3pm on Tuesday through to Sunday and serves breakfast and lunch.

Last year the coastal cafe featured in the BBC Two show Rick Stein's Food Stories which saw the beloved chef celebrate British cuisine as he explored the UK.

The Canteen is one of the latest additions to the Good Food Guide and achieved a very good rating overall.

The guide said: "If you are in Southwold, this bright, welcoming spot is one to know.

"Breakfast is served until 11am, while a counter piled high with cakes and bakes tempts the morning and afternoon crowd - although we suggest booking in for lunch if you fancy a real taste of chef Lindsey Wright's cooking.

"Hers is a light, contemporary touch, rooted in the 'let the ingredients shine' ethos."

The Canteen is only a short walk from Southwold beach and the High Street and has outdoor seating surrounded by a garden of fresh ingredients used in dishes.

The menu changes with the season and aims to use high-quality, locally sourced and foraged ingredients to make homemade preserves, condiments and cakes.

Each month chefs from across the county are invited to host a supper club with curated menus showcasing what Suffolk has to offer.

Tickets cost £55 per person and include a welcome treat, aperitif and a three-course meal.

On the last Sunday of the month The Canteen hosts a community lunch which is open to all on a pay what you can afford basis.

Following the lunch, entertainment for children is provided in a collaboration between the Old Hospital and Southwold Library.
