Police have been praised after around 1,000 people descended on a west Suffolk estate for an illegal rave.

Eight people were arrested after Suffolk Police closed down an illegal rave in Euston at about 3.50am on Sunday.

Now, Robert Childerhouse, the estate director at Euston Hall, has confirmed the illegal rave took place on estate land.

He continued: "Thankfully limited damage was done, and the police were on hand to deal with the situation.

"The service provided by the police was excellent and they worked with the estate team to help contain and disburse the event.

"We’ve not had a rave on the estate for over 15 years, although we are aware they do take place in the Thetford Forest area on a regular basis."

On Sunday, a spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said there were initially reported to be around 500 to 1,000 people present, with around 80 vehicles.

Just after 5pm they said officers took control of the music equipment and were able to fully close the event down.

Of the eight people arrested in connection with the incident, one was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving, criminal damage and possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply, two were on suspicion of drink driving and three were on suspicion of conspiracy to commit public nuisance.

Two people were also arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.

Two vans and a car were seized as part of the investigation along with various items of music and sound equipment, including five generators.

Euston Hall is home to Henry FitzRoy, 12th Duke of Grafton, and his family.

The hall, built in 1666, is set in 10,500 acres of landscaped gardens, parkland, woodland and farmland.

It hosts a number of events throughout the year including the Red Rooster music festival.
