A Suffolk couple, who started dating in their teens, are celebrating their platinum wedding anniversary.

Devoted Trimley St Mary duo John and Betty Woollan (nee Dyson) first met when they were aged 14 and 15 respectively and members of the Tilehurst Methodist Church Youth Club in Reading in Berkshire.

Now aged 92 and 93, they will be celebrating 70 years of marriage with family at their Trimley home on Thursday (August 29).

John and Betty Woollan on their wedding day in 1954John and Betty Woollan on their wedding day in 1954 (Image: Submitted) They married at Tilehurst Methodist Church on August 28, 1954 and have spent much of their time together in different countries while Mr Woollan served in the army.

Over a 30 year period, they spent time in Africa, Cyprus and Germany, while Mr Woollan was also posted to Jamaica to help prepare the country for independence from the British Empire, which it gained in 1962.

While they were living on the Caribbean island, the James Bond film Dr No was filmed there and the couple were invited to the movie's after-party in Montego Bay, befriending a number of the actors who have since visited them at their Trimley home.

Mr Woollan left the military in 1975 and the couple moved to Felixstowe.

The great-grandparents have also been actively involved with charities in the town, particularly the Felixstowe Community Hospital League of Friends and The Felixstowe Society, which keeps an eye on events in the town.

They have also organised social events, including whist drives.

Their four children are Margaret Burrows, Rosemary Woollan, the late David and Ian, while they also have four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Explaining the secret of their long marriage, daughter Margaret said they had always "shared everything together".

"They have always been involved in something together and I think that is what has kept them together. They are a remarkable couple really," she said.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla have also sent them a card to celebrate their special anniversary.
