Smoke billowed across the A14 after a BMW caught fire.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a car on fire on the A14 westbound at Bury St Edmunds.
Four fire engines have been sent to the scene, including crews from Princes Street, Stowmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Ixworth.
Suffolk Constabulary attended the scene at 2.45pm on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for Suffolk Constabulary said: "We are attending reports of a BMW that was left in a layby on fire, we have no record of injuries yet, but the smoke is blowing across the carriageway."
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service received the stop call at 3.09pm.
