A mid Suffolk town is getting a multi-million pound injection for sports facilities, a district council has said.
Stowmarket is receiving a multi-million pound investment for new sports facilities in an effort to improve sport and wellbeing facilities.
A new trim trail is set to be installed at Chilton Fields later this week, to rebalance the Chilton Ward which often "compares poorly against the local area and nationally", according to Mid Suffolk District Council.
Other facilities will be worked on, such as improvements to the pitches at Chilton Fields and school site, including a new 3G pitch, multi-use games area, athletics mini track, active track and cricket nets.
The council also aims to improve connectivity in the area with some car parking improvements.
Tim Weller, cabinet member for environment, culture and wellbeing, said: “I am delighted the first work on this exciting project is getting underway.
“As a council, we have been dedicated to improving sports and facilities within Stowmarket. This scheme has lots of elements and it will take time to deliver them all - but it is great to get the ball rolling.
“These plans are ambitious, and we are confident they will be a great benefit for people in Stowmarket and neighbouring areas.”
The project is being funded partially by the council, who are contributing £450,000 towards to £2.4 million scheme, as well as the National Lottery, the Football Foundation and other contributions.
Suffolk County Council, Stowmarket Town Council, local schools, the leisure centre, the NHS, Active Suffolk, sports clubs, the Football Foundation and Sport England have all helped develop the plans as stakeholders.
The project was started to address health inequalities in Stowmarket, particularly the Chilton Ward, Mid Suffolk said.
