Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has offered her congratulations to pupils across the country and said they can be “really proud of what they’ve achieved”.

She said: “I do just want to say a huge congratulations to all of those young people.

“They’ve been through an awful lot in recent years and they’ve shown tremendous resilience, and they’ve had fantastic support from the staff and teachers within their schools and colleges, and it’s a big and exciting day for them.”

The proportion of A-level entries awarded top grades is up on last year and remains above pre-pandemic levels, national figures show.

More than a quarter (27.8%) of UK entries were awarded an A or A* grade, up by 0.6 percentage points on last year when 27.2% achieved the top grades.

This was also higher than in 2019 – the last year that summer exams were taken before the pandemic – when 25.4% of entries were awarded A or A* grades.

Thomas Mills

The Framlingham school recorded that nearly three quarters of grades were between A*-C, with around 20% of the year group achieving at least A grades in all subjects.

Headteacher Philip Hurst said: “We congratulate our students on their well-deserved success and we wish them well in the next, exciting stage of their lives.”

“It’s been great seeing their tremendous personal development and resilience. They’ve contributed so much to the school and sixth form and we will miss them.”

Thurston Community College

Sixth formers at Thurston Community College saw a 99% pass rate for this year's A-levels of which 28% achieved the top grades of A* to A.

Of the 78 students receiving their A-level results 81% received A* to C grades.

In addition, 70% of BTEC students passed at the equivalent Distinction*- Distinction. In addition 71% of students taking the EPQ qualification passed with A*- A grades.

Maéve Taylor, principal at TCC, said: “All of these students had unprecedented disruption to their GCSE studies, yet their commitment to studying and to the wider sixth form experience is commendable, with many of this cohort having undertaken Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards and participated in many music, dance and drama performances, as well as raising money for charity."

Haverhill Community Sixth Form

The sixth form has reported it has achieved its best ever vocational results.

Pete Wilson, Head of Haverhill Community Sixth Form, said: “I’m pleased that so many of our students are moving on to their first choice of university, apprenticeship or employment.” 

County High School

This year marks the end of the sixth form at County High School in Bury St Edmunds.

Of those receiving their results, 41.5% secured A or A* grades, with 64% achieving A*-B. 

Camelia Gregor, who only moved to England at the start of Year 11 and for whom English is an additional language achieved A*A*A* and a double A* in her EPQ and will now be going on to study Global Development and Anthropology. 

Headteacher Sally Kennedy said: "We are very proud of our sixth form students who have all worked very hard and supported each other to fulfil their potential. 

"We know the personal challenges some of our students have faced and we are very proud of the resilience and determination they have demonstrated over the past two years."

Thomas Gainsborough

The Great Cornard school has reported that 99% of its students received an A to E grade, and 81% achieved A to C's.

Both figures were a rise on the last set of pre-Covid grades.

Headteacher Helen Yapp said: "The results are particularly pleasing when compared to the 2019 results and when we take into account the disruption to learning during their GCSEs."

Royal Hospital School

The Holbrook school has seen a year-on-year improvement in the highest grades, with 40% of all grades being A*-A or equivalent.

Students have achieved the school's highest ever percentage of A*/Dist* grades with 25% of pupils achieving AAA (or equivalent) or higher.

Farlingaye High School

At Farlingaye High School, 18 students achieved a full flush of A and A* grades across their chosen three or four subjects.

Overall 20% of sixth formers secured top A*-A grades, with 51% of students achieved grades A*-B and 73% securing grades A* to C. 

The school was among a number in the county to face difficulties due to RAAC concrete and had to partially close some of its buildings back in September.

Headteacher Peter Smith said: "These results will open doors to exciting futures, whether in higher education, apprenticeships, or careers.

"They also show that no matter what challenges are thrown at a group of students, whether that’s been an education interrupted by a pandemic or the recent significant challenges the school has faced with RAAC, they have the determination and resilience, they can overcome any obstacle and achieve great things.”

Kesgrave High School

More than three quarters of students at Kesgrave achieved A* to C grades in their A-levels this year.

Of those 30% of students received all A* or A grades, which is higher than the national average at 27.8%.

The school offers over 40 subjects for A-level and BTEC students.

Felixstowe School

At Felixstowe School, headteacher Emma Wilson-Downes commended the students as 60% of this year's students will be going to study at university.

This is the highest proportion the school has seen move on to higher education.

The headteacher said: “The support and kindness they have shown to each other, alongside the work ethic they have built and continually demonstrated, will be a huge asset to them in their future careers."

St Joseph's College

The Belstead-based school saw two-thirds of its students achieve one A* or A grade as it celebrates the achievements of 79 A-level students this result day. 

In addition to its A-level results, six of the eight students on its triple BTEC sport and exercise science course and 21 on the double BTEC course attained the maximum D* D* D* grade.

Principal Danielle Clarke said: "The happiness of students – and their families – when the results come in and future destinations are secured, cannot be overstated. We have loved having these diligent and delightful young people at St Jo’s and wish them all the best in the exciting years ahead."

Ipswich High School

A total of 40 students from Ipswich High School received their results on Thursday, with 40% of all grades achieved A*-A .

In addition, 1 in 5 grades were A*.

School head Dan Browning said: “I am delighted for our pupils who have worked so hard to achieve these outstanding results. Huge thanks to their teachers and families for the support they have given them throughout their post-16 studies."

Stowupland High School

The school saw 64 students take A-Levels this year, as well as other Level 3 qualifications.

Among those who picked up their results today were twins Tommy and Elsie Chapple, 18. 

Tommy dreams of becoming a lawyer and achieved A in Sociology, a B in History and a C in Politics and hopes to study at either Manchester Metropolitan or the University of East Anglia.

Woodbridge School

This year, the school is celebrating a record number of students achieving straight A*/A grades.

16% of students achieved A*s, 44% A*-A, 66% A*-B amd 98%A*-E.

Shona Norman, Head of School, said: "I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our students upon their excellent A level results; their achievements are testament to the hard work and dedication shown throughout their time with us at School. I would also like to thank our superb staff for their commitment and diligence."

Abbeygate Sixth Form College

A total of 523 received A-Level grades. They saw a 98% overall pass rate with a 71% pass rate at A*-C.

Out of those who studied A-levels, 472 sat 3 A-levels or more and 89% of people received A* to C grades.

Stuart Small, Deputy Principal at Abbeygate said: “We're extremely proud of all our young people who've worked incredibly hard this year. These results reflect not only the outstanding commitment each student has made to their studies, but also the dedication of the staff who've been supporting them along the way.

West Suffolk College

583 students received vocational qualifications achieving a pass rate of over 95% with the majority achieving Merit and Distinction grades.

“Thanks to the support of our amazing staff, the class of 2024 have excelled themselves and we look forward to seeing them all go on and achieve great things in the future."

One Sixth Form College

More than 600 students received A-levels and 572 gained vocational qualifications.

ONE saw a 97% overall pass rate, with 68.31% of students achieving grades at A* to C.

Out of those who studied A-levels, 399 sat 3 A-levels or more and 88% of people received an A* to C grade. 

99.4% of students passed their vocational qualifications.
