A community leader has spoken of her shock after two serious assaults which left one man with serious facial injuries and another unconscious.

Mayor of Sudbury Alison Owen has said people should be able to feel safe to walk around the town following the news of two men being attacked in the space of seven days.

On Saturday a man was left with serious facial injuries after police were called to reports of an assault in Friars Street

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and robbery but has since been released on bail with conditions to return on October 24.

The second assault happened while a man was leaving Friars Meadow at about 7.15pm on Tuesday.

"It is such a terrible thing to hear about.

"People should not be afraid to walk on their own and along our beautiful meadows.

"I really hope we don't have any more incidents like this as we need to feel safe walking along our streets, we don't want to be walking in pairs all the time."

Anyone with any information regarding the assault in Friars Street is being asked to contact Suffolk police, quoting crime reference number 37/42927/24.
