A yellow heat-health alert has been extended for Suffolk as temperatures are set to reach 30C.

The alert, which was issued by the UK Health Security Agency and Met Office, was originally in place from 9am on Monday until 11pm on Wednesday.

However, this has now been extended to 9am on Friday.

It comes as the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and flooding for Thursday.

"Heavy showers and thunderstorms" are to be expected to arrive on Thursday and "may lead to some disruption", the Met Office said.

With parts of the county likely to reach the heatwave threshold of 27C over three consecutive days, the heat-health alert highlights the threat of increased deaths among older and vulnerable people.

Temperatures are expected to reach as high as 30C in some parts of Suffolk on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the UKHSA said there should be a focus on those "particularly in the 65+ age group or those with health conditions, but impacts may also be seen in younger age groups".

Yellow heat-health alerts are lowest tier that can be issued, with amber and red alerts reserved for hotter temperatures.
