Stores in Suffolk are at risk as a major retailer is expected to close hundreds of its shops across the country.

Earlier this month, Carpetright filed a notice of intent to appoint administrators following a fall in demand for carpet. 

Nestware Holdings, owner of the flooring retailer, also said a major cyberattack in April halted trade. 

Carpetright is set to be bought in a rescue deal by rival retailer Tapi which has agreed to buy the Carpetright brand, intellectual property, 54 stores and two warehouses.

Carpetright operated 272 stores across the UK, including two in Ipswich and one in Lowestoft, before entering insolvency. 

The rescue deal means more than 200 stores are expected to close with more than 1,000 jobs lost, although an official list of stores closing has not been announced. 

Kevin Barrett, of Carpetright owner Nestware, said: "Whilst we succeeded in finding a buyer, the deal is limited to a select number of stores rather than the business a whole and will sadly impact a large number of colleagues and staff. 

"We have tried everything to turn Carpetright around and I am truly sorry that we were unable to save more jobs."
