A Suffolk town council has been rocked by the resignations of six councillors within a month.

Nearly half of the 13 councillors at Framlingham Town Council have left, with most departing over the last 10 days.

Simon Garrett, who used to chair the council’s planning committee, was among the councillors who resigned and said the authority had been left in a "fragile position".

Mr Garrett said the resignations related to the breakdown of relations between staff and some councillors and how the matter was being handled internally.

Framlingham town councillor Tim FitzHigham said: “We have unfortunately lost several councillors recently for a variety of reasons.

“Currently, we have two vacancies that we are procedurally allowed to fill and we have received two applications from interested individuals who wish to stand at our next meeting.

“Additionally, there is interest from others to fill the remaining vacancies once the public notice period has expired.

“As ever, we look forward to welcoming new councillors and working together to bring about positive changes in our community.

“Our town councillors are dedicated volunteers who contribute their time for the benefit of Framlingham.

“While our current number of councillors is at its smallest number since during the COVID outbreak, councillors continue to work diligently to get positive things done.

“Having a full cohort of councillors enhances our ability to achieve more for our town and we encourage anyone interested to get in touch."
