A groom who had been working for 14 years to recreate the General Lee car from the Dukes of Hazzard finally completed his dream car just in time for his wedding.

David Lay, a huge fan of the 1970s television series The Dukes of Hazzard, married his very own Daisy Duke, Sonya Barnard, on Friday (June 28) at Stowmarket register office with the groom arriving in his replica of the famous car.

"It was amazing that he had it finished just in time for the wedding," said his sister, Sue Robertson. "After all these years! He loved that programme. We all did. We were huge fans."

David did not however get out of the car in the traditional Dukes of Hazzard way by climbing out of the car window. Famously in the programme, the Duke brothers Bo and Luke Duke had glued their car's doors shut.

"I think he was worried it would mess up his wedding suit!" Sue said.

The car, complete with the disinctive hooter from the show, pulled up rather sedately outside the register office - unlike the car in the series which was always being chased by the hapless detectives Boss Hogg, Sheriff Roscoe P Coltrane and the Sheriff's solemn-looking dog, Flash.

After the service, which was attended by close family, everyone got in a mini bus to head for Felixstowe for a party on the beach.

Sonya and David, from Needham Market, have four children between them, Sonya's children, Kim, Kieran and Karl, and David's son, Oliver, 19. Sonya has six grandchildren.

Sonya and David and the whole family then went on the new Felixstowe Ferris Wheel.

"Sonya was the first bride to ever go on I believe," said Sue. "I must give a shout out to the lovely man who runs the wheel. He let us all go round three times and he kindly stopped it when one of Sonya's little grand-daughters got a little bit scared."

David and Sonya will soon be enjoying a honeymoon in Benidorm. Let's hope Boss Hogg is nowhere to be seen.
