Silverware stolen from St Michael's Church in Framlingham

The warden of St Michael's Church in Framlingham discovered serious damage to the building and its safe on Thursday.

Police have launched an investigation into the burglary and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The break-in happened as intruders gained access to the church, in Church Street near the town centre, during the early hours of the morning. 

The church safe was damaged and drilled into - with the silverware inside, including chalices, stolen. 

A set of ancient doors were also damaged during the break-in.

Rector Chris Davey said he was thankful for the outpouring of support after the incident - with some messages coming from as far away as the United States.

He said: "The silverware is marked with smart water, so if it is found it can be safely returned to us. 

"Although we closed on Thursday, we have now dusted ourselves off to continue with church activities. Luckily nobody was injured or traumatised during the break-in.

"I am thankful for the fantastic support the church has received from the local community - I have even had emails from over the world from countries such as America and Germany."

Suffolk police has launched a probe into the break-in and are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information related to the incident to come forward.

A spokesman for the force said: "The offenders forced their way into the building, causing damage, while an untidy search was carried out before an amount of silverware was stolen."

Anyone with information or believes they may have seen suspicious activity in the area surrounding Church Street should contact Suffolk police, quoting reference CAD 66 of June 27.
