Thieves targeted fire crews while they were attending a call to deal with an east Suffolk house blaze that was threatening neighbouring homes.

Firefighters from Leiston discovered that some lighting they had put out to close a road for safety reasons had been stolen while they were attending the incident in Waterloo Avenue, Leiston at 9.20pm on Wednesday.

They had been joined by crews from Aldeburgh, Framlingham and Saxmundham to tackle the blaze in a building measuring 10m by 15m.

The firefighters had worked hard to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby properties and eventually succeeded in putting the fire out.

However, they subsequently found that the two blue lights had been stolen.

A spokesperson for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said: “Whilst at an incident on Wednesday evening, the Leiston fire crew had two small flashing blue lights taken from the safety cordon around the hydrant and the incident area.

"This was discovered whilst the crew was putting away equipment after the incident.”

Fire crews have been busy attending a spate of suspected arsons in the county this week.

On Tuesday evening, 16 fire engines attended a blaze at the Delphi factory in Newton Road, Sudbury.

A cordon was put in place around the derelict site, which measures 100m by 100m.

American-owned conglomerate Delphi Diesel Systems closed in mid-2020, causing hundreds of job losses.

Following the incident, the owner of the two flats described being "shaken up" after fleeing the fire when he smelled smoke and looked out of the window to see flames shooting up out of the bin.

Three teenage boys were initially arrested in connection with this suspected arson, but have since been released on police bail until July 29.

Meanwhile, a 14-year-old boy had been arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with the Sudbury incident and bailed until July 6.
