As he looks ahead to the Suffolk Show, William Hargreaves from Savills discusses the importance of rural events.

Offering a shop window for farming, the countryside and the rural way of life, county and agricultural shows continue to be a much-loved fixture in many people’s calendar.

Shining a light on the UK’s rich rural heritage, such events celebrate the crucial role our farmers, landowners and countryside play in the economy.

Of course, much like our farmers and their rural businesses, county shows have had to adapt with the times. Combining tradition with up-to-the-minute tech, they now often encompass a large range of family-friendly activities that appeal to a wide audience.

But at their heart they are still primarily agricultural shows, educating visitors about where their food comes from and how their rural surroundings are managed.

In this digital age they also have a valuable function for farmers – providing a wonderful social occasion and helping them to connect with consumers.

Alongside local produce to taste and buy, visitors can also see demonstrations of centuries-old skills – blacksmiths, thatching and wood turning for example – many of which are now highly sought-after.

With half term on the horizon, it’s fast approaching that time of year when we celebrate the very best that our wonderful county has to offer – when Trinity Park once again throws open its gates to welcome tens of thousands of visitors for the Suffolk Show.

From the ever-popular food and drink area, through to displays, demonstrations and exhibitions from a range of community groups and organisations, there really is something for everyone to enjoy. But the Suffolk Agricultural Association has not lost sight of its important goal of educating children and adults about the county’s role in food production.

Savills has been supporting the Suffolk Show for more than 30 years and it is always the first date that we look for when planning our events.

This year we will be at Stand 571 opposite the President’s Ring – so do drop by and say hello.

One of the county’s many charms is that it continually flies under the radar. But there is much to celebrate and we should be proud of the great work that we do. The Suffolk Show has been providing a perfect stage for generations – and long may it continue.

Savills will be at Stand 571 for this year’s Suffolk Show, which takes place on May 29 and 30.
