Man detained by police after incident in Ipswich town centre

Officers were alerted to a burglary at Carats Jewellers in Buttermarket at 4.35am on Thursday, before a further call reported a male suspect had climbed onto the roof. 

Cordons were in place along a number of streets in the town centre as emergency services attempted to get the man down.

Negotiators could be seen on an aerial ladder platform talking to him, before he was brought down shortly before 2pm. 

A 50-year-old man has been detained by police and taken to hospital as a precaution.

Businesses were forced to close, with access to the Buttermarket shopping centre restricted.

Ann Jones, 52, work at a newsagents in the town centre and was unable to get to work because of the incident.

She said: "It's really worried me. Police have been here but no-one knows if my shop or any of the other shops were broken into yet."

"It is really scary to think someone has been able to gain access to the roof of this building, especially seeing what he has access to."

A spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary added: "Police would like to thank local businesses and the public for their patience and understanding."
