Max Turner, from the new homes team at Savills, discusses the growing demand for bungalows.
In the past few years, we have seen the not-so-humble bungalow surge in popularity.
Indeed, views of bungalows for sale on our website have more than doubled since 2019, as a new generation of buyers appreciate the many benefits of single-storey living.
Accessibility, of course, is a big part of the draw. Not only are there no stairs to contend with, bungalows often boast spacious and open floor plans, offering built-in flexibility that can be attractive to young families, people with disabilities and those wishing to future-proof their home to allow for greater independence when they are older.
With many bungalows being detached, they also offer more privacy than an apartment, semi-detached or terraced home would typically provide. Bungalows also tend to sit within their own private garden, providing easy, level access to the outdoors for entertaining and cultivating a garden.
New-build bungalows have the added advantage of typically being more energy efficient and super low-maintenance.
In Suffolk, we recently launched five three-bedroom bungalows as part of The Lawns in Stonham Aspal, near Stowmarket. Meticulously designed and crafted by local developer Landex New Homes, the properties each have a guide price of £695,000 and are ready to move into now.
Features of note include a spacious kitchen/breakfast room, living room with granite hearth and wood burner, en-suite bathroom to the principal bedroom and a landscaped rear garden with patio. They also have the benefit of a garage and underfloor heating via air source heat pump.
Elsewhere, Denbury Homes’ Barleyfields scheme on the outskirts of Debenham includes a lovely three-bedroom bungalow with a guide price of £500,000. With views over surrounding farmland, the property includes a kitchen/dining room, separate living room and en suite to the principal bedroom. There is also a garage and ultrafast BT fibre broadband to all plots.
In west Suffolk we have Goldings Yard in Great Thurlow, near Haverhill – an exclusive collection of four contemporary properties by Laragh Homes that includes a beautiful two-bedroom bungalow with a guide price of £365,000.
Finished to a high specification, the property backs on to open fields and includes an impressive open-plan kitchen/dining/living room, ample parking and underfloor heating by air source heat pump.
While low in stature, bungalows are certainly not short of admirers. With the latest in modern fixtures and fittings and the reassurance of new-build warranties, they can be a compelling choice for those looking for stress-free living.
Certainly, if recent demand is anything to go by, the desire for lateral living looks very much set to continue.
