An abandoned garage site in an east Suffolk town is being transformed into affordable homes.

The site in Leiston will become 10 homes thanks to a partnership between Flagship Homes and builder Marfleet and Blyth.

The 48 garages, which were built in the 1950s, had not been used since 2011 and this work comes following their demolition.

Delivery manager at Flagship Homes, James Ollington, said: “Having the opportunity to regenerate what was an unused area into much-needed homes is a really great feeling.

"It’s a real pleasure to be working alongside Marfleet and Blyth on this scheme.”

All the new builds are social rent properties and will be occupied by people on the housing register at about 60% of the market rate.

These homes comprise one and two-bedroom bungalows and houses.

The bungalows are wheelchair accessible and all the homes will have solar panels.

Construction is anticipated to finish by the autumn.

South Close is one two schemes Flagship is working on in Leiston - the other being 74 affordable homes at Picture House Green.
