A new pirate-themed crazy golf course in Lowestoft will be teeing off this week.

The attraction will open in the former nightclub at Claremont Pier, on Lowestoft's South Beach, on Friday, March 29.

A team of workers is currently assembling the course at the venue, which is being transformed into an 18-hole amenity complete with a pirate ship, fort, cave, desert island, dockyard and jail.

The owners are hoping the new attraction - called 'Pirates at the Claremont' - will revive the pier's fortunes which suffered during the bad weather last summer.

The family decided to open the adventure golf venture after closing the nightclub last August.

Ben Llewellyn, pier director, said: "It's all going according to plan."

The former nightclub has been fully cleared and 90pc of the new adventure golf course has been built.

"There are more days of rain than of sunshine, so we thought it's better to have an indoor activity rather than outdoors," Mr Lllewellyn said.

"There is really nothing else quite like it in the town."

He said he hopes the new amusement is "going to be big".

"I'm hoping people enjoy it and spend a bit of time here. Only time will tell."

Visitors will be able buy drinks next door at Bar 20 and take them to the crazy golf course.

'Pirates at the Claremont' opens at midday on Friday. The opening ceremony will be attended by the mayor of Lowestoft, Councillor Sonia Barker.

The golf course was built by a Shropshire-based company called Western Signs, then shipped to Claremont Pier last Saturday, March 23.

A team is currently assembling the parts on site and the work is expected to be finished by Tuesday, March 26.

Initially, opening hours will be from 12pm to 10pm daily, then 10am to 10pm during the summer months.

Entry costs £7.50 per person, with a 50p discount for those paying cash.
