A planning application has been submitted to convert an historic Debenham pub into a three-bedroom house.
The Angel Inn pub closed in 2019 and has been on the market multiple times since, most recently last year.
The Grade II listed timber-framed building, first recorded in a 1621 survey, was relisted as an Asset of Community Value in February 2021.
A viability assessment, submitted as part of the most recent application, states that the pub is no longer viable as a public house with issues like parking and customer numbers raised.
But previous planning applications to convert the Angel Inn into residential accommodation have been met with a furious community response, with residents angered at the loss of a historic pub.
One comment on a 2021 planning application relating to the pub read: “The Angel is an important, viable asset to the community and to the sustainability of our high street. Its loss will have a significant knock on affect to the viability of other small businesses and our community as a whole.”
Another said: “Having lived in Debenham over 30 years, I have witnessed experienced landlords running a viable and profitable pub with food service in the Angel.”
A public consultation is currently underway on the plans, with the ability for anyone to comment on the proposals on Mid Suffolk District Council's website.
