Drivers were faced with long delays as part of the A12 was closed.
National Highways closed the southbound carriageway near Colchester on Wednesday afternoon.
A spokesman for National Highways said the lanes were closed due to an infrastructure defect on the carriageway.
The road remained closed while emergency services were in operation, but has since reopened.
It comes as drivers are facing delays on the A14 near Ipswich.
A lane closure has been put in place in the westbound carriageway near the Copdock Interchange.
A Suffolk police spokesman said that it is a National-Highways related issue.
