Hundreds of eager shoppers have been pictured gathering outside the new Primark store in a west Suffolk town centre.

Primark opened the doors to its newest store in Bury St Edmunds at 10am on Wednesday after a countdown and huge cheer from the staff.

"There's a definite buzz in the air and around town," said one happy shopper.

"Lots of people are walking past excited and there are a lot of people waiting for it to open who are not in the queue yet."

Pictures from the opening show the queue stretched past the cordon put in place at the former Debenhams unit in the Arc Shopping Centre, where the new store is located.

"People at the front of the queue had their Primark bags open and ready to go," said another shopper.

"Staff are lining the entrance waving flags and dancing as customers come in."

Excitement for Primark in the town has grown since the budget fashion retailer announced plans to move into the former Debenhams store back in 2022.

Philippa Nibbs, Primark director of sales UK, London and the South East, said: "Since we first announced plans to open the store it's been great to see such a positive reaction from the local community."

Primark is not the only business to open in the former Debenhams store as earlier this year Everyman Cinema opened in the basement of the unit.

A third unit could still open inside the former Debenhams as the unit under Primark was put up for rent earlier this month.
