A historic market town in west Suffolk has been named as one of the most underrated UK towns by a world travel guide. 

World Atlas listed six towns across the country that showcase history, culture and areas of outstanding natural beauty. 

Bury St Edmunds was one of the underrated towns included in the list.

Describing how the town was named after King Edmund, the guide said: "His remains were enshrined in Bury St Edmunds Abbey, which soon became one of England's most important places of pilgrimage, surpassed only by Canterbury Cathedral in Kent.

"While the abbey is now largely ruins, you can still visit its lovely gardens and St Mary's Church.

"Another one of the town's essential landmarks is St Edmundsbury Cathedral, built some years later in the 11th century and expanded over the centuries into a stunning example of Gothic and Romanesque architecture."

The other towns named by the guide as underrated are Weymouth, Merthyr Tydfil, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Penrith and Royal Leamington Spa.
