A 10-acre grassland field plot in west Suffolk has sold for more than twice the expected price at an auction sale.

Cheffins auctioneers said there was "frantic" bidding from multiple parties for the 10.18 acre area near the village of Lidgate, which lies between Clare and Newmarket.

It eventually sold for £186,000 at the December sale  - far exceeding its guide price of £80,000 to £90,000.

The field is surrounded by ditches, mature hedgerows and trees with access via a culvert to the  B1063 Lidgate to Wickhambrook road.

It was owned by Lidgate Parochial Church Council of St Mary’s Church and the funds will now go to help the local church.

Cheffins said land lots fared particularly well at the sale - but the strongest competition was for the Lidgate land.

Cheffins director Ian Kitson said: “Grass and amenity parcels on the edges of villages continue to appeal to a wide range of buyers including neighbours, amenity buyers, locals wanting grazing space and longer-term speculators, all of which often equates to some competitive bidding in the room and some spectacular prices.”
