Work to clear a flooded road closed for 19 days continues as part of the road froze creating ice.
The A143 Compiegne Way in Bury St Edmunds has been closed since Sunday, December 31 after heavy rainfall left it submerged.
The prolonged closure has caused heavy congestion in and around the town centre as many people try to find an alternative route.
The vandalism to control gear delayed clear-up works in the west Suffolk town but teams from the authority where able to clear 72,000 gallons of water from the road on Wednesday.
A spokesman for Suffolk Highways said: "Teams have made good progress in removing floodwater.
"The southbound side of the road is now completely clear of water, where the northbound side is covered in ice where the floodwater was.
"It is expected the flood water will have cleared, therefore we'll be ready to jet and clear silt from the system.
"Whilst the road is closed, we've arranged for streetlighting teams to attend the site to carry out any repairs needed to their assets.
"We will also be assessing the damage to the road surface to ensure repairs can be made ahead of the road reopening.
"We apologise for the ongoing inconvenience. It remains Suffolk Highways' top priority to get the road reopened as soon as we can."
