A man has been charged in connection with an armed robbery from a petrol station. 

Police were called to the incident at the Shell petrol station in High Street in Newmarket at 7.15pm on Tuesday, December 12 shortly after a suspect walked out, having stolen cash and cigerattes.

On December 28, David McGowan, 48, and of Tutte Gardens in Newmarket, was arrested on suspicion of robbery and taken to Bury St Edmunds police station for questioning. 

McGowan was charged with robbery, possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence, and possession of a kitchen knife. 

He appeared before Suffolk Magistrates' Court on Saturday, December 30, and was remanded to appear before Ipswich Crown Court on Monday, January 29. 

Police are still keen to appeal for any doorbell or CCTV footage between 6.30pm and 8pm on Tuesday, December 12 in the area of Tutte Garden, Hamilton Road, Valley Way, Rowley Drive and Falmouth Avenue quoting crime reference number 37/71656/23.
