A man has been arrested after an armed robbery at a petrol station in which staff were held at gunpoint. 

Suffolk police have confirmed that a 48-year-old man from Newmarket was arrested on suspicion of robbery on Thursday.

Police were alerted to an incident at 7.15pm on Tuesday, December 12, after a suspect walked out of the Shell petrol station in High Street, having stolen cash and cigarettes while holding the shopworkers at gunpoint.

He had a handgun and also pulled out a knife from his waistband, before putting a large, army-style, camouflaged rucksack onto the counter and telling a staff member to fill it with cash and cigarettes. 

Police conducted a search of the area but made no arrests and have continued investigating the crime.

The 48-year-old man was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where he currently remains.

Officers are continuing to appeal for anyone with any information to contact police, particularly those driving along High Street or in the surrounding area between 6.45pm and 7.45pm on December 12.

Anyone with CCTV or doorbell cameras in the area is asked to check footage around these times and report anything that could be of use to police quoting crime reference 37/71656/23.
