The Mayfair in Bungay to close after noise complaints

The Mayfair in Bungay opened on a temporary licence on Friday, December 8, after a frantic week of 15-hour days transforming a former newsagent into an entertainment venue.

Owners Silas Rayner and his wife Daisy, who run the popular Maui Waui festival near Dereham, even created a Winter Wonderland and Santa's Grotto at the back of the premises.

Mr Rayner says a series of noise complaints from residents along Broad Street has pushed East Suffolk Council to revoke the temporary licence.

"We are absolutely gutted to be closing," Mr Rayner said.

"Since we opened we have been super busy with every type of person from all walks of life here enjoying themselves.

Despite the setback, the business owner was always planning to close in January to make a series of "structural tweaks" to the cafe/bar and apply for a full licence.

Mr Rayner is determined to bounce back in the new year.

He said: "What these two weeks have shown is that there is an amazing demand for this in Bungay, and it was off to a flyer.

"I want to reassure people I have exciting plans and visions and we will be back in some form or another.

"It would be amazing if the neighbours would cooperate with us so we can come to a solution to prevent noise from impacting them.

"And as part of the structural tweaks I was going to make anyway with the bathroom facilities, some sound prevention tweaks will have to be considered.

"I do totally sympathise with those affected and hope we can meet on a middle ground."

Tonight, (December 22), will be the last night The Mayfair, which is about 20 metres from The Green Dragon Pub, will be open in the former newsagents on Broad Street.
