Parts of Suffolk will be hit with strong gusts of winds as Storm Pia hits the county. 

A yellow weather warning for winds is in place for the northern part of the county on Thursday, December 21. 

Towns including Mildenhall, Newmarket, Eye, Stowmarket, Halesworth, Southwold and Bury St Edmunds will be hit by the winds. 

Danish authorities have named it Storm Pia but it has not been officially named in the UK. 

A spokesman for the Met Office said the strongest winds for the county will be between late morning and just after dusk, with gusts of winds reaching 40 to 45mph in places. 

After Thursday the forecast will remain unsettled with showers and longer spells of rain on Friday. 

Into the weekend showers will continue but there will be drier and brighter interludes with winds remaining blustery.

Travel ahead of Christmas could be affected and drivers are being warned to drive cautiously in these conditions. 

The AA is advising those who intend to beat the Christmas rush by setting off on Thursday to be alert to debris and flooded sections on the road. 

Nick Powell, AA patrol of the year, said: "Many places across the UK are likely to see strong winds and rain in the run-up to Christmas, so it's very likely trees and debris will be littering the roads."

"As always in windy weather, leave plenty of space behind other vehicles and adjust your speed to suit the conditions, especially when crossing bridges or high-sided vehicles."

Suffolk Libraries has issued a warning to customers about its mobile library services ahead of Thursday.

The Leiston/East Suffolk mobile will not be running on Thursday but customers planning to use the Ipswich/central Suffolk mobile service will see it run as usual until the final stop of the day which will be missed to ensure the service can avoid the Orwell Bridge on the return to base.

The Bury/West Suffolk mobile should be running as usual.
