A man has been arrested and charged with a public order offence after locking himself into a cubicle in a bus station's toilets.

Suffolk police was called to Bury St Edmunds bus station in St Andrews Street North on Thursday afternoon after it was reported that a man had locked himself into a cubicle in the on-site public toilets.

According to a post on social media from Suffolk police, the male refused to come out of the cubicle when the response team arrived.

One of the officers, PC Tim Bond, finally persuaded him to open the door.

As the man allegedly demonstrated verbally abusive behaviour he was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence, though the police have confirmed that while in custody he will be given access to a range of support to help him.

The bus station waiting area was closed at the start of last month following multiple fights, violence and anti-social behaviour.

So far, plans to curb the issues have been criticised, such as the suggestion to spend £1,600 a week hiring security.

Councillors opposed the idea and said that the police were responsible for maintaining public order at the bus station, though the Bury St Edmunds police inspector said that the council shared responsibility for this issue with the police.

The issues have been plaguing the area since March 2023.

Suffolk police has since increased patrols in the area.
