One lane of a major carriageway was shut heading towards Suffolk due to potholes in the road.
Police closed part of the A12 northbound carriageway near Colchester due to the condition of the road on Wednesday morning.
Officers reported that icy conditions had caused three potholes to emerge.
A spokesman for Essex Police said emergency repairs are currently being completed, and the road "will reopen as soon as possible."
The northbound carriageway from Colchester heads towards the Copdock Interchange outside Ipswich and meets the A14.
It has since reopened.
