New aerial image highlights Lowestoft third crossing works

The impressive new image has captured the scale of the development at the site of the long-awaited third crossing.

Updating on work on the southern approach, a Gull Wing Bridge spokesman said: "As you may have noticed kerbstones are being installed on the approach, separating the road and integrated pedestrian/cycle path.

"The sub-base for the paths is in the process of being laid and compacted.

"Meanwhile the material for waterproofing the roadway has now started to be delivered on site."

It comes as the long-awaited third crossing moves closer to completion - with the final bascule bridge span set to arrive in the new year.

Lake Lothing’s navigation channel is set to be closed to marine traffic for three weeks in January and February as the main bascule span of the Gull Wing bridge will arrive by sea from the Netherlands before being installed.

Set to transform how traffic moves around the town, the multi-million pound development is due to open next year.

Construction work started in spring 2021, with leading building and civil engineering contractor Farrans Construction overseeing construction works on the Gull Wing, on behalf of Suffolk County Council.

Once open, it is said it will reduce traffic congestion in Lowestoft, help to regenerate the area and attract new investment for the local economy.
