Ipswich-based mobility aids supplier Felgains is celebrating 45 years of helping locals lead independent lives. A steadfast presence in the community since 1977, the family firm puts its success down to expertise passed down the generations and always putting customers’ needs first.

While a milestone year for the company, it acknowledges that 2023 has been challenging for many. “In particular, we see first-hand how NHS waiting lists mean people having to manage at home for longer, sometimes with severely limited mobility,” said a spokesperson for Felgains. “With this in mind, we wanted to offer our advice to make life easier this winter.”

Here are Felgains’ top tips for managing at home this season:

Stay as active as you can - physically and mentally

Whatever your mobility, there are enjoyable indoor activities which improve physical and mental health. Consider simple chair exercises to improve your strength and balance while being easy on the joints. Or take up a new hobby or interest like building a family tree. Built into a strong daily routine, these help you find meaning in otherwise long winter months.

Prioritise nutrition

Getting the right nutrients is the cornerstone of good health, especially at this time of year. This will boost your energy levels, help your immune system fight infections, and support your mobility through healthier joints. Enjoy treats as part of a balanced diet, just not too much too often!

Prevent falls at home 

Small changes can make a big difference. You may be able to rearrange belongings to avoid over-reaching or remove clutter that could be a tripping hazard. Well-fitting footwear is important, as is good lighting. See if you can join a local exercise program, too.
